The Evergreen is being designed to receive One Planet Living endorsement, which would make it the second project in Ottawa — and only third in Canada — to receive this international sustainability designation.
This urban infill project will deliver a 9-storey cross-laminated timber (CLT), mixed-use building to Sandy Hill, incorporating a restored Gothic Revival-style Anglican church that the community helped save in 2014 by converting it into a restaurant and event space. Windmill will continue this legacy by partnering with the community to add residential units to this historic property. Through low-carbon building materials, The Evergreen will be the latest project redefining sustainable development in Ottawa.
Materials and ProductsBoosting its sustainability, The Evergreen will focus on materials with low-embodied carbon, including mass timber and materials from the existing structure. The building will be constructed using pre-fabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT), which results in less embodied carbon and allows for an expedited construction timeline. the building will also include geothermal heating and cooling and procurement of recycled consumables.
Culture and CommunityThe role of the former church in the community remains at the heart of The Evergreen. Adding to the area’s amenities, the project will offer welcoming and inclusive spaces that connect the past to the future through programs around art, music, innovation and local partnership. Windmill will acknowledge the history of the site through the design.
Travel and TransportJust minutes from the Rideau Canal, Parliament Hill and the Byward Market, The Evergreen is highly connected to transit and has a near-perfect bike score. Low-carbon transportation options will be the primary means of transport for residents and visitors.
